Jason Garza is a documentary photographer, cinematographer, and visual journalist currently based in Washington, D.C. Since graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. in Radio-Television-Film focusing on documentary film and sociocultural anthropology, Garza has shot and worked with multiple stakeholders to lead production and post-production on two nationally broadcast documentary television shows, both reaching over 40 million viewers. His first show, Chris Cox Horsemanship, showcases the life and practices of an Australian equestrian and cattle rancher. His second show, “Ag” on Wheels, highlights the laborious and fruitful Texas agricultural sector.
In addition, Garza has shot and produced numerous documentary-style videos and promotional content for government agencies, national nonprofit organizations, and corporations, including The Texas Department of Agriculture, The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Teach for America, Foreign Policy, Magnet Schools of America, and more.
Garza is currently a freelance visual journalist regularly covering breaking news, politics, and feature events for The New York Times, Reuters, The Texas Tribune, and The Texas Observer. In 2022, supported by a grant from The Pulitzer Center, Garza’s documentary photography covered international access to abortion medication after the historic and unjust fall of Roe V. Wade (The Pulitzer Center – 2022: A Year in Photos). Inspired by his upbringing on the U.S.-Mexico border, Garza’s work focuses on geopolitics, international humanitarian crises, socio-political activism, national and state elections, subcultures and communities, and more, covering assignments in Texas, Wyoming, Washington D.C., Paris, and Mexico.
Garza has been published by The Michelin Guide, The New York Times, Reuters, The Washington Post, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, The Texas Tribune, Texas Highways, Texas Observer, Texas Monthly, and Washingtonian.
